Insurance School (Non-Life) of Japan (ISJ)

ISJ - General Course

This is an educational and training programme for insurance practitioners in the East Asian regions, which has been held in Tokyo every year since the commencement of the ISJ in 1972. The name of the course was changed to “General Course” when the Advanced Course was created in 1991.

Since its inception in 1972 until the 38th session in November 2010, as many as 1282 participants from 15 regions had graduated from the course.

THEME:

The theme of the course is selected by gathering information to meet the needs of participants, and in conjunction with industry experts to get the current trends in the insurance market and regulatory movements.

The following are the themes of the General Courses in the past:

27th 1998 "Marine and Inland Transit Insurance"
28th 1999 "Automobile Insurance"
29th 2000 "Fire Insurance"
30th 2001 "Underwriting of Commercial Risks"
31st 2002 "Marine and Inland Transit Insurance"
32nd 2003 "Personal Lines of Insurance"
33rd 2004 "Automobile Insurance"
34th 2005 "Commercial Risks"
35th 2006 “Non-Life Insurance Business in Japan”
36th 2007 “Non-Life Insurance Business in Japan”
37th 2008 “Non-Life Insurance Business in Japan”
(The 2009 session was not held owing to the outbreak of a new-type of influenza.)
38th 2010 “Non-Life Insurance Business in Japan”
(The 2011 session was not held owing to the Great East Japan Earthquake.)

PERIOD:

The course runs for approximately two weeks beginning sometime from September to November each year.

ELIGIBILITY:

Participants are required to have at least three years’ work experience in non-life insurance companies, associations, governmental insurance authorities or organizations and need to be nominated by them.

LANGUAGE:

English is used as a common language throughout the course.

LECTURERS:

In addition to lecturers from the institute, lecturers are principally invited from Japanese non-life insurance companies and universities / colleges who have expertise in the particular subjects to be covered in the sessions.
